A moving companion to help plan, organize and manage a move one step (and pop of confetti) at a time.

This project was completed as part of Designlab’s UX Academy course.

BACKGROUND

The average American adult has about 5 hours of leisure time in a day after work and other responsibilities. Adding a move with moving date pressures makes it a stressful endeavor which requires more support.

RESEARCH GOAL

I want to know the pain points of adults (between the ages of 30-45) who are moving to understand why it is stressful and how we can support them through that process.

User insights shifted my project direction

“It was such a whirlwind because we only had two weeks to move. I had a work trip for two weeks, and my partner was leaving after I got back.”

— Research participant

“It was everything was at once; fast. I wanted to have a clean cut and leave everything.”

— Research participant

“Packing and finding time in your day to pack outside of your normal day.”

— Research participant

MAIN PAIN POINT

With a month maximum overlap between their old and new housing, there was a lot of stress in coordinating the move in a timely manner. Many have to move after work or on weekends only, and 1/5 juggled the move between travel for work.

RETHINKING ASSUMPTIONS

I’ve been thinking about moving in three stages:

  • deciding to move / planning

  • the actual move / logistics

  • after the move / getting settled

Initially, I thought most people would find getting settled into a new place to be the hardest part of the move, but after I sent out an initial poll 3/6 participants thought that the actual move was the most difficult part. This shifted the project focus completely. I set out to learn more about that.

How might we help users like persona, Jean, plan their move within their timeline?
